Flashes are the vivid, brightly colored strips of Tartan wool or cotton that hangs down from the creases of the kilt hose. These are essentially just decorative while also helping to hold the hose in place. You can bring the hose cuff down to cover up half of the flash, leaving just the bottom half of it showing.
